Flatness-based control of a two-degree-of-freedom platform with pneumatic artificial muscles

چکیده
Abstract—Pneumatic artificial muscles are a quite interesting type of actuators which have a very high power-to-weight and power-to-volume ratio. However, their efficient use requires very accurate control methods which can take into account their complex dynamic, which is highly nonlinear. This paper consider a model of two-degree-of-freedom platform whose attitude is determined by three pneumatic muscles controlled by servovalves, which mimics a simplified version of a Stewart platform. For this testbed, a model-based control approach is proposed, based on accurate first principle modeling of the muscles and the platform and on a static model for the servovalve. The employed control method is the so-called flatness-based control introduced by Fliess. The paper first recalls the basics of this control technique and then it shows how it can be applied to the proposed experimental platform; being flatness-based control an open-loop kind of control, a proportional-integral controller is added on top of it in order to add robustness with respect to modelling errors and external perturbations. At the end of the paper, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is shown by means of experimental results. A clear improvement of the tracking performance is visible compared to a simple proportional-integral controller.

Nonlinear Model-Based Control of a Parallel Robot Driven by Pneumatic Muscle Actuators
In this contribution, three nonlinear control strategies are presented for a two-degree-offreedom parallel robot that is actuated by two pairs of pneumatic muscle actuators as depicted in Fig. 1. Pneumatic muscles are innovative tensile actuators consisting of a fibrereinforced vulcanised rubber hose with appropriate connectors at both ends. The working principle is based on a rhombical fibre s...
متن کاملSliding-mode Position Control of a 1-dof Set-up Based on Pneumatic Muscles
A one-degree-of-freedom arm driven by pneumatic muscles has been designed and built in order to research the applicability of pneumatic artificial muscles in industrial applications. The experimental set-up is very non-linear and very difficult to control properly. As a reference, an enhanced PID controller was designed. At the same time, a sliding-mode controller based on an observer was desig...
متن کاملDynamics and Control of a Pneumatically Actuated Robotic Manipulator
This paper deals with the dynamics and control of a two degree of freedom robot arm actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). The high power-weight ratio of PAMs justifies their use as actuators in robotics. To achieve trajectory tracking performance, controllers are constructed based on a dynamic model of the robot arm. Due to the high non-linear dynamics of the robotic system, fuzzy co...
متن کاملControl of Wheeled Mobile Manipulators with Flexible Suspension Considering Wheels Slip Effects
Wheeled mobile manipulators utilize both the locomotion capabilities of the wheeled platform and manipulation capacity of the arm. While the modelling and control of such systems have previously been studied, most of them have considered robots with rigid suspension and their wheels are subject to pure rolling conditions. To relax the aforementioned limiting assumptions, this research addresses...
متن کاملSimulation of Control of a Scara Robot Actuated by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles Using RNAPM
This paper describes the simulation of movement control of a one-degree-of-freedom articulated robot arm SCARA actuated by a pair of McKibben pneumatic artificial muscles. The pneumatic artificial muscle is the actuator and emulates the behavior of biological muscles; due to its nonlinear behavior, there is also a need to develop control systems for robot arms using this type of actuator. Resea...
